Fergus was a sweet, talented boy who even in the whelping box was "full of himself". He was equally at home in the show ring, the field, or on the sofa, and is definitely a "mama's boy". He could be very serious but had a fun sense of humor; he also had an alter ego I liked to call Frank, after Frank Sinatra, because he sometimes preferred to do things "his way". Fergus was everything I was hoping to get when I bred his litter and was a once-in-a-lifetime dog - in my mind, he was the epitome of an All Around Labrador. Not only did he finish his breed championship easily with 3 majors and 3 major reserves (shown in working condition), he went 5-for-5 to earn his Senior Hunter title and finished his Master Hunter title 9/16/12 to become the 58th Labrador in the history of the breed to earn both an AKC Championship and a Master Hunter Title. His obedience and rally titles were earned quickly with placements. I am incredibly proud of his trainability and versatility and enjoyed every moment of the journey with him. Fergus lived a rich full life and crossed over the rainbow bridge at 15.5 years old 8/10/22. See a tribute to Fergus here.

Show Highlights

Fergus finished his AKC Championship 6/9/12 by winning Best of Breed over multiple Specials for his 3rd major and a Sporting Group 4! He finished with 3 majors and 3 major reserves. Thanks to Tonya Struble of Rush Hill Goldens for beautifully handling Fergus to most of his AKC points. Here is a link to a video of Fergus in the Sporting Group. Fergus finished his GCH 12/8/13 with 5 majors, and all but one of his wins were over specials.

Fergus won a JAM at the 2013 National Specialty and Best in Veteran Sweepstakes at the 2015 National Specialty. He finished his UKC Championship in two days (as a veteran) with 3 BOBs, a Group 3, a Group 1 and a Best in Show.

Huge thanks to Butch and Bev Higgins of Butch Higgins Retrievers for taking wonderful care of Fergus and training him to his MH title!

Fergus was owner-handled to his HRC HRCH title with 8 passes entirely from Finished. He was also owner-trained and handled to his HRC Upland title. He has 3 CKC MH passes and qualified for and completed 3 series in the 2015 Canadian National Master, all owner-handled.

The judges were Joe Reinhardt and Tom Quarles. Fergus was 1 of 11 dogs (out of 40 entered) in his stake to pass this test. 9/15 - 9/16/12: Fergus finished his Master Hunter (MH) title at the Sand and Sage HRC's Hunt Test at Scooteney Reservoir (Mesa, WA). The judges were Susan Bell and Gene Tripp. Fergus is the 58th Labrador in the history of the breed to earn both an AKC Championship and a Master Hunter Title!

5/3 - 5/4/14: Fergus was owner-handled to his 7th MH pass at the PSLRA Hunt Test (Carnation, WA). The judges were Lee Salmon and Linda Johnson.
6/13 - 6/15/14: Fergus passed his 8th MH test at the Umpqua Valley Retriever Club's test in Glide, OR under judges Frank Pendergast, Janet Peters, and John Schulte (apprentice).
7/5 - 7/6/14: Fergus passed his 9th MH test at the Rose City Labrador Retrieve Club's test on Sauvie Island (Portland), OR under judges Don Aker and John Kinnard.
8/16/14: At the Whistling Wings HRC Summer Hunt, Fergus was owner-handled to his 7th HRC Finished pass, which completed his Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH) title. All of Fergus' HRC passes were owner-handled. The judges were Troy Thacker and Judy Dupree.
8/17/14: At the Whistling Wings HRC Summer Hunt, Fergus was owner-handled to his 8th HRC Finished pass, bringing his point total to 120. The judges were Paul Putkey and Tracy Griffin.
8/23/14 - 8/24/14: Fergus was owner-handled to his 10th MH pass at the PSLRA hunt test at Pepper's Farm (Carnation, WA) under judges Chuck Hilton and Sharon Hilton.
5/2/15: Fergus earned his first CKC MH pass (owner handled) at the Golden Retriever Club of B.C.'s Hunt Test (Abbotsford, BC) under judges Lori Little and Susan Endersby.
5/22/15: Fergus earned his 2nd CKC MH pass (owner handled) at the Kamloops Gun Dog Club hunt test (Kamloops, BC) under judges Peter Brunold and Lori Little. Because he is an AKC Master Hunter, this pass qualified him for the Canadian Master National, which will be held in Bridal Falls, BC in August 2015.

At the Chuckanut Dog Training Association's Obedience and Rally Trial October 31, 2009, Fergus earned a qualifying score and 1st place in Rally Novice B to complete the first leg of his Rally Novice (RN) title. The judge was Ms. Susie Osburn.
At the Chuckanut Dog Training Association's Obedience and Rally Trial November 1, 2009, Fergus earned a qualifying score and 2nd place in Rally Novice B to complete the second leg of his Rally Novice (RN) title. The judge was Chris Cornell.
At the Whidbey Island Kennel Club Show November 14, 2009, Fergus earned a qualifying score and 4th place in Rally Novice B to finish his Rally Novice (RN) title. The judge was Carolyn Wray.

At the Mount Baker Kennel Club Show 5/16/15, Fergus earned a qualifying score in Rally Excellent B under judge Donald Rennick to finish his Rally Excellent (RE) title.
At the LRC, Inc. National Specialty 10/8/15, Fergus earned his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title.
At the Whidbey Island Kennel Club Show 11/14/15, Fergus qualified in Open A Obedience with 3rd Place to earn the first leg of his CDX title. The judge was Donald Rennick.
